Mastering mitered corners is one of those beginner-friendly techniques that instantly elevates your sewing projects. Once you learn it, you’ll find yourself using it everywhere — from tablecloths and placemats to napkins, curtains, table runners, and even cozy whole-cloth blankets made from minky and gauze. It’s a simple detail that makes your handmade pieces look polished, professional, and oh-so-giftable!
Supplies
- Sewing machine - I used my Janome HD9V2BE, my favorite straight stitch machine
- 2½ yards of 54” wide fabric (cotton, linen, or home décor weight)
o Make sure to zig zag/serge then prewash and dry your fabric in the same way you will do this when laundering BEFORE you begin sewing
- Matching thread
- Pins or clips
- Iron and ironing board
- Hem gauge
- Marking pen or chalk
- Acrylic ruler
- Serger I used my Janome Air Thread 2000D (optional, for finishing edges)
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Bamboo stick or Hera tool (for turning corners)
- Woven label (optional, for personalization)
Instructions
1. Gather your supplies
2. Pre-wash and dry your fabric the same way you’ll care for your finished tablecloth. Press if needed.
3. Trim or serge all raw edges to even them out.

4. Press your first fold: Turn under 1/4-1/2" on all sides (using your gauge), pressing firmly with your iron.
5. Press your second fold: Fold over another 1/2-1" along each side again using that handy dandy gauge) and press. Pin in place as you go.
6. Mark the corners:
- Unfold one corner's second fold from each side of the corner.
- From the point of your corner, measure and mark double the width of your second fold (my first fold was 1/4" and my second fold was 1", therefore I marked the fabric 2") on both sides of the corner.

- Draw a diagonal line connecting those marks.

7. Fold right sides together at the corner, aligning your marks. Pin.
- Slow down at corners and pivot neatly with the needle in the down position, for a professional finish.
- Optional: tuck your woven label into one edge a few inches from a corner before stitching it down.
Finishing Touches
- Newlyweds or new homeowners
- Seasonal decorating
- Coordinating napkin sets (use the same method on smaller squares!)
